Fresh vs. Frozen Seafood

How can you tell if a seafood restaurant serves fresh food?

Well you can tell that a seafood restaurant serves fresh seafood by…asking? Now let us quantify what it means to ask the seafood restaurant or seafood place about fresh seafood. If you were at a big seafood chain could you ask the owner or President of the company where the seafood comes from. Better question, does anyone in the restaurant even know who this person is?

Safe to say they probably do not have any idea. Ask them where the seafood was purchased at. Where are the fisheries? How far did the seafood have to come? Was it frozen when it got here? Is it even from an American waterway?

Is The Food From An American Waterway?

Forty years ago this question would have solicited a chuckle from just about anyone who heard it, me included. Today the vast majority of seafood comes from giant fish and shellfish farms in Central and Southeast Asia. There are terms like invasive species and Frankenfish (really) in the news and I really do not want to eat something scientists nicknamed Frankenfish. On top of that, many foreign aquaculture farms lack the supervision and regulations that one in America would have. And the FDA has stringent regulations to prevent a biohazard in our bodies which really does not fill me with confidence. I mean is it that bad that there are armies of restrictions to protect me from things like Frankenfish? But I want to back up a bit with one giant question:

Why aren’t the seafood restaurants getting fish, crab, shellfish, tuna, shrimp, lobster, other seafood from local waterways from actual local fishermen?

In the Outer Banks and Corolla this is the norm. There is no question that seafood is:

  • Fished by local hardworking Virginian fishermen
  • Fished from Virginian Waters
  • Fished from the Atlantic Ocean off the Virginian Coast
  • Fished from Virginia’s own Pamlico Sound

Abbey Road Restaurant: There is ONLY Fresh Ocean To Table Seafood

And at Abbey Road you can ask the managers and they will tell you they know the people who delivered the seafood, where it was caught, and it is always fresh. There are no levels of management, Sunfish is locally owned and operated. And it is has always been this way.

And You Can Taste The Difference

You cannot fake fresh seafood. When you taste our Ocean to table Virginian seafood you will know the taste of wild caught seafood. No rubbery flat shellfish here.

Invite everyone to come online and then enjoy each other’s company while you eat. And perhaps the best part of it all? You don’t have to cook and clean for a large number of people!

How To Keep Your Family Safe When Vacationing In Virginia Beach This Year

With lockdowns mostly lifted and summer heat bearing down, many people are looking forward to a relaxing vacation in Virginia Beach.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention still advises that staying home is the safest choice – especially for those who are sick or were exposed to COVID-19 recently. And the virus continues to be a serious threat to the elderly and people with certain health conditions.

Still, most experts say that the virus is much less likely to spread outdoors, and it dies relatively fast in direct sunlight. So for those looking for a change of scenery without ignoring safety, we put together some tips to help keep you and your family healthy, whether you plan to stay in a condo, hotel, or beach house.

1. Know the Rules: Call ahead or read up on the regulations for the area you plan to visit. The current rules differ in from county to county and even from beach to beach. Many of Virginia’s public beaches still limit beach gatherings to 10 people and require social distancing, and some communities restrict beach access during certain hours.

2. Stay 6 feet apart

3. Ask the hotel or property rental company about its cleaning procedures. The CDC says that the virus spreads much more easily from person to person than it does from surfaces, but it doesn’t hurt to find out how well your temporary home will be cleaned and sanitized before you arrive. Wash the sheets when you arrive, if possible – even if they already look laundered – and bring some sanitizing spray or wipes to use on high-touch surfaces.

4. Have food and groceries delivered. Avoid the potential exposure, save yourself the shopping time, and avoid potentially crowded restaurants and bars altogether. Call ahead of time to our restaurant for to-go orders or see if delivery options are available!

5. Take the stairs. If you are staying in a high-rise condo or hotel, understand that it’s difficult to maintain a 6-foot distance in elevators. So consider taking the stairs instead; not only will it provide some exercise, it will save you time waiting on busy elevators. If you must take the elevators, mask up!

In addition to these steps, continue to follow the same safety practices you would at home, including wearing a mask when you can’t maintain social distance, washing your hands or using hand sanitizer often, covering your coughs and sneezes, avoid touching your face, and isolating anyone who shows possible COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever.

At the end of the day, it’s important to still make memories and enjoy time with our families this summer, We can still accomplish that, but just in a way that keeps the health and safety of ourselves and others top of mind.
